Tribal-run Casino Arizona has acquired the naming rights to the Phoenix Rising Sports Complex, the home stadium of United Soccer League (USL) club Phoenix Rising FC.

The arena anchors the 223-acre, $1 billion development Westgate Entertainment District, the 'crown jewel' of sports and entertainment complexes.

The venue has been renamed the Casino Arizona Field, while the casino will also benefit from branding exposure throughout the facility as part of a multi-year deal.

This will include Casino Arizona and sister property, Talking Stick Resort, having their logos featured on pitchside hoardings. In addition, in-stadium banners, the scoreboard and the team’s practice field will now feature the venue’s new name.

Casino Arizona is an enterprise owned and operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community (SRPMIC). The new name has already been implemented around the stadium, including the scoreboard and barricades around the field that will also display the logos of both Casio Arizona and its sister property Talking Stick Resort.

Sports betting is not yet legal in Arizona, but a bill that would regulate sports wagering is currently under consideration in the state.

“We have had a wonderful relationship with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, and its member families of the Solanna Group who own the land where our stadium resides, since our launch in 2016,” Phoenix Rising FC governor, Berke Bakay, said.

“Our stadium is located in close proximity to Casino Arizona, also making this agreement a natural fit.”

Phoenix Rising FC played its first game at the renamed stadium on March 16, drawing 3-3 with New Mexico United.

Ramon Martinez, director of public relations for Casino Arizona, added: “Casino Arizona has long maintained a reputation for supporting major sports in the Valley, and Phoenix Rising is among the most exciting teams to watch.”

Phoenix Rising FC is the latest US sports team to enter into a partnership with a gambling operator, with USL rival LA10 Football Club having also agreed a deal with digital wallet provider Skrill.

Elsewhere, New York City FC of the Major League Soccer has entered a deal with Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort, while the Boston Red Sox became the first Major League Baseball team to strike up a partnership with a casino and gaming company, after confirming a deal with MGM Resorts International.

Casino Arizona has acquired the naming rights for the stadium, which sits on land owned by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. The team has a long-term lease on the land, on which it is considering building a permanent stadium upon acceptance into Major League Soccer.

“Phoenix Rising FC was looking for a long term stadium partner with similar values focused on providing the highest quality entertainment for our fans and visitors who will continue to travel to Arizona to enjoy our games and our MLS Mobile-Mini preseason tournament.”

The casino, operated by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa, is a natural partner for the complex, and is located only 2.8 miles away from the stadium. The team and casino have already partnered on one event this year, the east-valley game 1 watch party.

In addition to the naming announcement, club governor Berke Bakay also announced that a new road will be built in the coming weeks, and is expected to improve ingress/egress capacity by 50%. Bakay continued the good news, stating that the team has plans to expand seating to nearly 10,000, though the timing of expansion wasn’t clear in his comments.
