The novel begins with the main character, a still unnamed man thinking about his past. The narrator claims the man always wanted to live in New York, mainly because his favorite uncle, Lloyd, lived there, surrounded by technology and modernity. The narrator lived as child in the country and was amazed by everything he saw in the big city. The buildings were filled with posters asking for social change, an element which pointed out from the beginning that even though everything seemed to be fine, that was far from being the truth.

The narration moves to the present when the same person, now a grown man, looks at the dilapidated building in which his uncle used to live. The building is found in a zone not deemed safe and the narrator admits that there are little chances of the uncle still being alive. The main character is revealed as being a man named Mark Spitz, the commander of a unit of sweepers sent to Zone One, a delaminated are in New York, to decontaminate the area of people who were infected. The infection is also referred in the novel as being “the plague”, the purpose being to show just how quickly it spread and affected almost every person. The origins of the plague remain unknown but the narrator describes its rapid spread and how no one knew what it was until it became too late.

Through another flashback, the narrator presents the main camp, a place where people felt relatively secure. The newest addition to the camp was a corn field, something which made everyone happy and brought them new hope. Through this, it is also revealed that those who were not infected yet survived by taking what they could from the abandoned business and stores now left uninhabited. Still, an important detail is that the soldiers and sweepers only took products from certain stores the owner gave them permission to do so. This is seen as another sign the living population hoped things will one day return to normal.

The narrator distinguishes between two types of infected groups and two groups of people haunting them. Mark and the rest of the team were tasked with killing those trapped in various buildings and thus cleaning up those spaces. The characters all suffer from one form or another of PTSD or, as it is referred in the book. PADS. The symptoms are the same and the situation become so dire, confinement spaces for those to affected to be useful were built to contain those not infected.

An important element presented in the novel is the idea that the sweepers did not noted down the number of infected people they founded in the city but rather focused on the living. This proved just how for the people living in the society described in the novel, survival was the most important thing and nothing else mattered for them.

The way in which the sweepers disposed of the killed skels is also described and surprisingly, it is a humane one. The skels are put into plastic bags and then taken to the streets where they are later collected by other teams. The skels are humanized through the names the sweepers gave them. This also shows how some people still hoped a cure would be found and skels could be turn back to normal. Mark admits however he does not believe such a thing can happen and sees it as his mission to eliminate as many skels as possible.

The narrator paints a normal picture of Manhattan at the end of the first day spent by the characters in the Zone. The narrator claims nothing much has changed, the buildings remaining the same, with the only difference being the lack of people, traffic and public lightening. This is compared with the state of other major cities all over the world, some of which were completely destroyed in an attempt to eliminate all the skels in an area through various violent methods such as bombing entire cities and destroying them to the point where nothing else was left behind.

The second day in the novel is identified as being a Sunday and Team Omega wake up in an apartment they had made their home. The team is unable to get into contact with their superiors, an event which foreshadows the destruction of the control center. The team gets ready to clean another area of the Zone and the day is described as being just another normal day. In the second day, the narrator reveals that the number of skels was going down and how sometimes the patrol groups would often find people still not infected by the plague but in a very bad shape caused by a lack of proper food and medical attention.

During the second day, the Omega Unit met up with Bravo Unit, dispatched in the same area to take care of the stranglers. As soon as the members recognized one another, they started arguing over which group was entitled to be there and which group was wrongly sent there. At the end, they realized something bad must have happened at the control quarters and decided to stick together.

In the second day, Mark thinks about how the rich always escaped and how no matter how dire the situation was, the never truly suffered. The people who were sent on raids and who put their lives in danger where usually just normal working people, who, had no other chance but fight for their lives. The second day is filled with Mark’s remarks on the present while comparing it with his past memories. Through this method, Mark manages to keep his head above ground and not to let himself be overly affected by what he saw around him.

The last day concludes the novel and in comparison with the previous two days, the action advances at a much rapid pace. Gary is wounded during an attack and the two teams are surrounded by stranglers. Knowing there is nothing more he can do for the others, Mark tries to escape to the camp in a desperate effort to save himself. This proves how for the characters in the book, nothing matter more than survival. Mark’s efforts prove to be useless when he is overcome by a large crowd of stranglers. The last image described in the novel is that of Mark, being infected , and the image of the camp in the distance, being eaten by a large group of stranglers.
